Inheritance Tax

Passing it on with the relief intact.

Inheritance tax planning for business owners, property owners and families, led by a Chartered Tax Adviser. Advice that is worth having years before it is needed.

The challenge

Most IHT is paid because nobody planned.

Inheritance tax is one of the few taxes where doing nothing is itself a decision, because the reliefs have to be qualified for and most structures need time to bed in, and the April 2026 changes to Business Property Relief mean assumptions made a few years ago may no longer hold.

How Saymur solves it

A plan built around your estate and your family.

We map out what you own, how each part of it is held and who you'd like it to pass to, then set out the options in plain English so you can decide how far you're comfortable going.

  • Estate review and IHT exposure calculation
  • Business Property Relief and the April 2026 cap
  • Agricultural Property Relief where relevant
  • Lifetime gifting, exemptions and the seven-year rule
  • Trusts, family investment companies and succession structures
  • Wills and executor planning alongside your solicitor

FAQs

Common questions

When should I start inheritance tax planning?

Earlier than feels necessary, because many of the most effective steps, gifting and restructuring among them, only work fully once a period of time has passed, so leaving it late tends to narrow the options rather than remove them entirely.

What changed with Business Property Relief in April 2026?

Business Property Relief used to take a trading business out of inheritance tax almost entirely, and from April 2026 the relief is capped, so only part of the value passes free and the balance is taxed. Establishing where that line falls for your business is worth doing now.

Do I need a trust?

Not necessarily. Trusts suit some families very well and are an unnecessary complication for others, so we tend to look at gifting, ownership structure and wills first and only recommend a trust where it genuinely earns its place.

Do you work alongside my solicitor?

Yes, and it usually works best that way, with us handling the tax analysis and the structuring while your solicitor drafts the wills and deeds that give effect to it.
